Maximum Benefits and Minimal Disruptions
Cruising is a niche travel sector, making up less than 2% of global tourism. It is a managed form of tourism, planned years in advance, allowing cruise lines and local communities to collaborate for maximum benefits and minimal disruptions.
Cruise tourism disperses visitors beyond key gateways, supporting New Zealand workers and tour operators by bringing guests to various attractions within reach of ports.

Creates Jobs
The cruise industry also creates jobs and opportunities globally. In 2020, compared to 2019, passenger embarkations dropped by 81%, cruise-supported jobs by 51%, and the total economic contribution fell by 59%, highlighting the pandemic's severe impact.
Industry-leading protocols have facilitated the return of cruise tourism, with over 75% of ocean-going cruise capacity back in service in 2021 and nearly 100% was projected by August 2022.

Globally 24 Guests = 1 Full-Time Job
Cruise tourists significantly benefit economies, with every 24 guests supporting one full-time job and each guest spending an average of $1,200 in port cities during a seven-day cruise. Additionally, 60% of cruise passengers revisit destinations first seen on a cruise.
The resumption of cruising is driving economic recovery, with approximately 60% of cruise-related businesses hiring in 2022, despite 70% having reported layoffs and furloughs due to the pandemic.
The collaboration between cruise lines and local communities ensures sustainable tourism and supports both New Zealand’s and the global economy.
